Guidelines
Closing date: 5.00pm on Friday 1st
October 2010
Travel abroad to study Indonesian, Japanese,
Chinese or Spanish!
About The Walter Mangold Trust
The Walter Mangold Trust Fund was established in 2005 to further
the belief that greater understanding between the peoples of the
world, and consequently the lessening of conflict, can be achieved
by improving communication between them. The late Walter
Mangold believed that the study of languages, and the culture
associated with each language, is one way to increase international
understanding and tolerance.
(The story of Walter Mangold and the establishment of the Trust
can be read on this website.)
The Study Abroad Scholarships
To meet its objectives, each year the Walter Mangold Trust
provides Study Abroad Scholarships to assist young Australians who
are going abroad to study a language for a period of between three
months and one year. The designated languages for 2011 Study Abroad
Scholarships are Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese
and Spanish.
The intention is that young Australians who have reached
second-year proficiency at the tertiary level will spend a period
of time living and studying in another country; developing their
language and communication skills, and improving their
understanding and appreciation of the culture.
Since 2008, the Mangold Trust scholarships have contributed
towards the travel and living costs of young Australians studying a
language in Indonesia, China, Spain, Mexico, Chile, Columbia and
Japan. Their study time abroad has earned credit points
towards their undergraduate and graduate programs at Australian
universities.
In 2011 the Trust is offering a number of Study Abroad
Scholarships for language study overseas. The scholarship amount
ranges from $5,000 to a maximum of $20,000, to cover travel and
living costs while overseas.
Who is eligible to apply?
Priority will be given to applicants travelling abroad to study
Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese or Spanish.
The scholarships are restricted to applicants who:
- are residents of Victoria;
- are currently enrolled
in an award course at a tertiary institute in
Victoria;
- have already reached,
or expect to achieve, second-year language level proficiency in
2010.
Preference may be given to applicants whose financial
circumstances would not otherwise enable them to participate in
study abroad.
It is a condition of the scholarship that on completion of their
program of study abroad, the recipient must make a formal oral or
written presentation about their experiences of studying another
language and culture.
Applicants for 2011 Study Abroad scholarships must:
- currently be enrolled
full-time in an award course in a tertiary institution in
Victoria;
- have reached
second-year level competence in the language they plan to study
overseas (by the time that they propose to travel abroad, ie, the
end of 2010);
- be accepted for
enrolment in an accredited program of study in their chosen
language at an overseas tertiary institution acceptable to the
Trust;
- submit a program of
study for their language and cultural studies in the overseas
country.
- provide references in
support of their academic aptitude and
character;
- show that part of the
costs of their program of study will be covered by themselves, or
from other sources (eg, HECS, Fee Help);
- describe how they plan
to meet the oral or written reporting requirement on their
return to Australia.
- use the 2011
Study Abroad Scholarship Application Form.
Terms and conditions of the Walter Mangold Trust Study Abroad
Scholarship
It is a condition of the Walter Mangold Trust Fund Deed that, on
completion of their overseas program of study, grant recipients
must make a publication in Australia or deliver one or more
lectures in a public or educational institution in Australia, with
the intention of reflecting on their overseas experiences and
increasing the education, communication and understanding between
peoples and cultures.
Previous scholarship recipients have met this condition in
various ways, for example:
- Writing a descriptive
feature article for their student newspaper on campus;
- Presenting a lecture
and slide show to their Australian peers and
colleagues;
- Preparing a report for
a departmental publication;
- Making a presentation
to a language or cultural society in their area of
interest.
By mutual agreement, some new digital media formats may be
acceptable presentation formats, providing that the format is
sufficient to enable the scholarship holder to fulfil the intention
of the Trust to promote cultural and linguistic understanding and
tolerance.
Scholarship payments
Not all applicants will be offered scholarships, nor will
applicants necessarily receive the total amount of funds they have
requested.
Successful applicants must provide evidence of acceptance into
the destination course before any payment will be made.
The scholarship recipient will receive payment of the funds in
Australia.
Applicants can receive only one Study Abroad scholarship from
