2009 Study Abroad Grants-
for study in 2010
The Study Abroad grants( for study in 2010) have closed
and been completed. Congratulations to our successful applicants,
who have departed for study in China, Japan, Spain, Chile and
Mexico.
Visiting Fellow at The
University of Melbourne
The Fund is pleased to announce that the 2010
Visiting Fellow, Professor Shuhei Hosokawa
from the
International Research Centre for Japanese Studies in Japan, has
completed his Visiting Fellowship .
He is a world
renowned expert in interdisciplinary and comprehensive research on
Japanese culture from an international perspective. He speaks
English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian as well as Japanese and is
an excellent cultural ambassador for understanding between peoples,
that is a central mission for the Man gold
Trust.
Professor Hosakawa
arrived in Melbourne in early April and undertook his Fellowship
until July 2010. He delivered The Walter Mangold Trust Lecture as a
public lecture on Thursday 17 June
2010.
His visit has been a
great success.
The search for a
2011 Visiting Fellow will now commence.
In 2009, The Walter Mangold Trust Visiting
Scholar was Professor YONG ZHAO
Professor Zhao is the Director of the Center of
Technology and Teaching and Director of the US-China Center for
Research on Educational Excellence at the University of Michigan,
and is internationally renowned for using innovative technologies
to support Chines language teaching.
Professor Zhao undertook his Fellowship from 2-15 May 2009, and
gave a series of outstanding and thought provoking presentations
and master classes,and participated in forums, with leading
educationalists and teachers in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.
Professor Zhao delivered the Walter Mangold Trust Lecture as the
keynote address to the Asia Education Foundation National forum at
the Melbourne Airport Hilton on 4 May 2009.Details of national

The thanks of the Fund go out to Professor Zhou and The
University of Melbourne for a most important contribution to the
discussion and debate about education and education philosophy in
Australia.
Overseas Students Studying
in Australia
Congratulations are extended to the 8 Timorese students
who have been awarded scholarships to study English in Melbourne
and Ballarat. It is hoped that they will be able to use their
improved english language skills to further their own careers and
for the benefit of Timor Leste in general.
7 have arrived and have successfully commenced their studies.
The 8th is due to arrive at the end of August 2010.
